Teacher’s Pet

I was lucky and had a few amazing teachers, but my favorite is one of my English teachers from High School. She encouraged my writing and was a continual source of support and encouragement for me. She also was the first person to introduce me to the Myers-Briggs system and typed me as an INFJ, and she helped me move toward a greater level of understanding of myself.

I was somewhat troubled as a teenager and was pretty distrustful of my peers with the exception of a few friends, so my closest friendships were actually with a couple of my teachers who took time out of their lives to encourage me to apply myself more and give me warnings about sleeping in class and none of them liked my choice in friends, lol.

I remember a history teacher who was absolutely incensed about one of the boyfriends I had. He actually pulled me aside in the morning before class a few times to investigate how and why the whole thing was happening, and it was probably the first time somebody told me my love interest was going to drag me down. Oh, Mr. Janssen, you’re the first in the line of many with that…The guy definitely had some problems, and ultimately we almost got each other kicked out of school. We used to ditch class together, and the vice-principal and dean of students caught us one day. (I don’t want to post the whole story publically, but if you’re interested, e-mail me/private message me and I’ll tell you)

But he was also sweet, funny, caring, really good at math but completely uninterested in academics (he was a 16-year-old freshman in terms of how his schoolwork was going), and of course, was one of my drug hookups. I also felt really sympathetic and protective of him because he had a horrific relationship with his parents…He was like a puppy that got kicked around too much in terms of how that one went. The whole time we were together we pretty much followed each other around, both in trench coats, and I spent my pre-school mornings cleaning out his locker and attempting to organize his life for him, lol.

If you’re wondering what I looked like in high school, picture a girl in a band t-shirt underneath a pink trench coat wearing bunny ears. Yep. That’d be me.

Man, I’ve…well, I’ve been me for a very long time now, haven’t I?

As an adult, I definitely wish I had listened to my teachers more, but I can’t do anything about it, either.

  1. I KNEW IT ALL ALONG: WE ARE MYERS-BRIGGS SOUL MATES: INFJ’s. AND, I am that favorite English teacher in high school that so many had, thank you… :o)
