“Essence” – Lucinda Williams

Lucinda Williams has been sneaking around under the radar for years with a blend of folk, blues, and country.  This undefinable goddess has a down-to-earth touch and focuses on love, heartbreak, and longing. The title song on this album – “Essence” – is a song about love, but I honestly thought it was a stealth drug song. Well, you know, drugs and sex type deal. Oops, guess I’m projecting again.

Anyway, Essence isn’t her most well-received album, but it’s my favorite. Here we go:

Baby, sweet baby, I want to feel your breath
Even though you like to flirt with death

Baby, sweet baby, can’t get enough
Please come find me and help me get fucked up

I am waiting here for more
I am waiting by your door
I am waiting on your back steps
I am waiting in my car
I am waiting at this bar
I am waiting for your essence

I envy the rain
That falls on your face
That wets your eyelashes
and dampens your skin
And touches your tongue
And soaks through your shirt
And drips down your back
I envy the rain
