Mentor

Have you ever had a mentor? What was the greatest lesson you learned from him or her?

I’ve had many teachers on my path, some of them disguised, some of them not. A lesson learned through pain is no less valuable than a lesson learned through joy. I’ve had more mentors as an adult than I did as a child and all of them helped guide me back to a healthy path. All of them have my endless appreciation and love.

I’ll focus on a recent one, a therapist I had named John. John is a musician, and very spiritual. He’s also one of the few people I know in real life who’ve heard of Allan Watts, a philosopher, and enthusiast of meditation and mind expansion,  and encouraged me to pick up my spirituality again. He helped me put a lot of my past into perspective and really taught me how to put up boundaries between myself and others. I’ve tried to work on it in the past, but I always felt like boundaries were a cold and cruel thing. Boundaries actually provide space for you to love yourself, and space for others to learn from the natural consequences of their actions.

If you’re feeling lost – find someone to look up to that you can talk to. Be it a friend, family member, or a therapist – there’s no shame in asking for help. The only way we can grow is by learning. Recently, I’ve found it helpful to find “role models” – people who have had similar struggles and overcome them and found greatness.
