“There is a big difference between what we long for, what we settle for, and what we are meant for.”
Sonia Sanchez is a professor, and a revolutionary award-winning poet. Born in 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama, moved between different relatives throughout her young life. The death of her grandmother traumatized her, so she developed a stutter which pushed her to become an introvert. She excelled in school and earned an undergraduate degree in Political Science before doing postgraduate work at New York University. As a poet, she emerged in 1969. Common themes in her work are black identity, the importance of self-love, and motherhood.
