13th: On the alliance between government, corporations, and media

Comments 2 Standard

Do you believe the state has your best interests in mind? 13th’s center of interest is how the media and law have worked together to create fear toward and imprison blacks, especially men. Starting in the 70’s, the government persecuted black community leaders so much, that several left the country. For example, in the 1980’s, the news sensationalized the crack epidemic, and as a consequence, the 1990’s toughened drug crime sentencing. President Clinton’s presidency saw the greatest increase in detention centers and prisoners.

Now, we are contending with ALEC laws, which companies propose and fund. Examples of these businesses are Walmart, the tobacco industry, and CCA – Corrections Corporation of America, the fifth largest creator of prisons in the United States. You learn that private penitentiaries are a large source of profit. The more bodies they have in prison, the greater the income state officials make.
